The Convener's Welcome
It gives me great pleasure to advise you of the Royal National Mod 2009. The Mod celebrates the Gaelic language, literature, music and culture every year and this year returns to its birthplace - Oban -where it all began in 1892. An Comunn Gàidhealach, which was also founded in Oban, in 1891, has organised the event annually since 1892, the only exceptions being the years of the two World Wars. This year, therefore, we look forward to the 106th annual Mod and the fifteenth time it has been held in Oban.
We look forward to meeting our many friends whom we see every year and this being the Year of Homecoming, we hope to see visitors from around the world, many of whose ancestors were from the Highlands of Scotland and were native Gaelic speakers.
We hope that the Mod week will be as memorable as usual and that visitors enjoy all the competitions, concerts and informal gatherings which take place.
Elsewhere on this web-site you will find details of the Mod and our Secretary will be able to respond to any questions that you may have.
Oban is of course a leading tourist town, the centre of an area of outstanding beauty and ideal for sightseeing. Our principal sponsors, Caledonian MacBrayne, run 5 ferry services from Oban to islands such as Mull, Colonsay, Lismore, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist and visits to these islands can be quite magical.

We look forward to seeing you.
